Free Short Story, “But Mama, Grandpa is White!”

This short story reveals one of the richest men in the world last words to his illegitimate grand-daughter who happen to be African American. The word of the very wealthy white billionaire changed the life of the young black woman. And while the families of both sides of the family were battling in court over money, the young woman went on to build a massive fortune of her own, without ever sharing her secret with either side of the family.

It is at the end of this short fictional story, when you wonder if the old man planned for his grand-daughter to take over his massive fortune while the black side and the white side of the family were fighting over his estate?

But Mama, Grandpa is White!

My mother was showing my older sister who her father was, when he was on television. My grandfather was being interviewed, and my mother wanted my sister to know who her real grandfather was. I was only seven years old, but I quickly said very loud, “But mama, grandpa is white!”

My mother rushed to me, as if she didn’t know I was in the room. She picked me up and said very softly, “You must never tell anyone.” “Do you hear me?”

Of course I told everyone, but no one believed me, so I stopped saying it.

I am the black sheep of the family. Not because I’m African American, but because I was the only one whom my grandfather talked to. Grandpa’s side of the family was worth billions, and of course, none of Grandpa’s side of the family ever acknowledged the Black side of the family.

In actuality, I was the only one who visited Grandpa when he was ill and too weak to leave his bed on most days. His side of the family was all waiting for him to die, as was my own side of the family, so they could begin the battle over money. The DNA test was in and my mother was definitely the illegitimate child of one of the richest men in the world. My grandmother worked as a maid for the family, and it was said that the old man raped her, but my grandmother never confirmed or denied the facts.

My family didn’t have much money, but my mother managed to work and send four children to college. We lived a modest life, barely making ends meet. My father had disappeared shortly after I was born. My mother was proud, and hadn’t ask for any help. Grandpa had paid for her college education, through a trust fund, and with that my mother was satisfied.

My grandmother, refused to be involved. She had remarried and refused to be concerned about my grandfather and his money. I guess it didn’t hurt that grandma’s new husband was wealthy as well. As the story goes, my grandmother kept her mouth shut about the affair, and she married rich.

My older sister and two brothers were on my mother’s side and were waiting for my grandfather’s death. It didn’t matter, in their minds, what the will, said – they planned to contest in a big way.

As I stated before, I was the only grandchild who visited grandpa at his mansion during his last two years. It would take me one hour to drive to the estate, but some reason, I always looked forward to seeing the old man. I had just graduated from college and I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life. Somehow, I thought visiting my grandfather would help me to gain prospective. I had questions, and grandpa had answers. I only hoped he would be honest with me, as I intended to be with him.

The most surprising revelation came when grandpa shared with me how to make a million dollars from a $900 investment.

Grandpa talked and I listen. I did everything he told me to do, and earned $400,000 within 11 months. He appeared proud that I didn’t appear to be greedy and had settled for only $400,000 when I could have opted for twice that.

The second question I wanted to ask my grandpa, was a little more personal, and it took me almost a year and a half before I asked the question which had been on my mind for years, and I was only 24 at the time.

I asked my question one Saturday afternoon.

More than ever I was determined to marry an English man and live in England. The fact that I wasn’t’ an English citizen, had no affect on my goals. This had been a lifelong dream since I was a young girl.

After my second disastrous, encounter with the country of England, I decided my online dating would surely place me in a position to ultimately become an English citizen by way of marriage.

After several months of hot and heavy conversations, online and by telephone, with a young man, we will call Chad, I packed my bags and headed for England for the third time. I had extremely high hopes that our relationship would work out.

After I arrived at London’s Heathrow Airport, I was filled with excitement, and overwhelmed with grief, all within a span of 90 seconds. Because I had been a little late arriving at JFK, my seat on the aircraft was in the back of the plane.

As I waited my turn to get off the aircraft, I was filled with joy, at seeing a man I had come to care for deeply, online. I had no idea that our first meeting would be our last, , nor that a man whom I had never seen before could generate disappointment, embarrassment, and emotional pain in my life.

When Chad saw me in person for the first time, his face turned to a frown. He looked very upset, yet his reaction was reserved, as the English are noted for. As it turned out, Chad hadn’t really understood, when I told him I was a big girl.

A Short Love Story, A Love That Couldn’t Be

Melinda had left Denver abruptly. The newly, classified agency, within the agency, had arranged for her move from Denver to Washington, DC. She, nor any of the other, 23 agent and analysis, had been allowed to say good-by to friends, or co-workers.

Scott, the man she had been dating, for almost 5 months, had NOT, been placed on the special list, to be notified of her new location. And, now, every day her heart hurt, for the man she had walked away from, without so much as a good by.

She remembered, clearly, the events which lead to their separation........ A month before she even knew that she had been accepted for the position Scott had informed her that his ex-girlfriend had returned to Denver, and was pregnant with his child. He had asked Melinda to give him time to work through the situation before making any decisions.

Melinda remembered the disappointment and emotional pain, she had felt. She was the first to admit that she reacted without thinking. She had no idea that her mind would say one thing, and her heart could say another.

Scott was a Computer Science Professor at the University of Denver. They had met at a technology workshop, in New York City. When they realized that they were both from Denver, they became good friends. It had not taken long, before the friendship evolved into a personal relationship.

It had been a relationship of mutual respect, friendship, trust and passionate love making. Melinda remembered that she had been completely happy with Scott, until the ex-girlfriend drama.

Scott made every effort to assure Melinda, that the event was a passing phase, within their relationship, and encouraged her to have faith. That had been six months ago. She had not spoken to, nor seen Scott since that day.

A couple of days, after Scott’s upsetting news, Melinda’s father, had called to give her the news that she had been selected for one of the high tech, classified positions, in Washington DC The position, with the IIA, International Information Agency, was a classified spin off, from, “the Agency.” That is, until confidential information, about the new department and the staff, was published on a popular, non-government website.

Malinda's thoughts slowly returned to the present situation.

Now, her new job’s cover had been blown, the IIA agents and analysis, were ordered to report to work, with a toothbrush, and a change of clothes. The building and, staff were placed in lock down status. No one was permitted to leave and all cell phones had to be turned in for replacements. Melinda had read about incidents, such as this, but she had never expected to be personally involved, in a US breach of security, especially one as severe as this.

Malinda’s  job was to analyze, report, and investigate Internet, activity, information, and communications, which might have an adverse affect, on Homeland Security. The department operated, as a shadow, of one’s imagination. And because they never showed up, on anyone’s, budget, they had remained, undetected, at least until now.

Back in Denver, Scott was experiencing the same intense, distraught feelings, as Melinda.  A DNA test had confirmed what he had known all alone. The child, his ex-girlfriend gave birth to, was not his. He had suspected this because of his low sperm count, due to a childhood illness. This was the same illness, which resulted in him becoming, a computer nerd, rather, than an accomplished athlete.

He had played the “new daddy” game, while having the child’s DNA tested. Scott knew, the truth, he still helped his ex through the first month, of being a new Mom. When he finally, told his ex that he knew the baby wasn’t his, she too left his life, but not for long.

Scott was determined to find Melina, and realized, from her families reaction to her disappearance, that she had simply, relocated. What he didn’t understand, was why would Melinda, quite her IT position, with a Fortune 500 company, and simple, re-locate.

Murder By Choice

Mike loved Zalinda. Everyone in the family knew he loved her. Yet when the police showed up, because Zalinda was found dead in her apartment, no one in the family was surprised.

Mike supposedly was on a three week business trip for the law firm. However the firm where my brother was employed told the authorities that Mike had resigned a month ago..

When the police questioned my mother about Mike’s whereabouts, I wasn’t overly concerned, until the detective informed us that they had a warrant for my brother's arrest.

It was at that moment, that all the pieces of the puzzle suddenly came together. Mike had been acting strange for about six months. I had wondered for months what my only brother had been up to. Now I knew. Once the police left, our house, I carefully informed my mother that we would probably never see Mike again.

Mike and Zalinda had started dating in high school, and continued their relationship throughout college and even into law school. Yet, they had never married. The word on campus was, Zalinda was bi-sexual and had strung Mike alone for the ride.

Mike never let on about his personal feelings, yet I knew something was bothering him. His personality was geared towards revenge. Cold, calculated, manipulated, revenge. He was the sweetest guy on earth until you crossed him. Everyone in the family knew about the flaw in his personality. In fact, everyone from the church’s minister to the school psychologist had warned my mother about Mike’s behavior.

For some strange reason, Zalinda didn’t get the memo.

I am Mikea, Mike's twin sister.

My brother had helped Zalinda through college, law school and the difficult bar exam, and believed that one day, they would be married. The rumors, that she had used him and laughed about their relationship with friends was true.

As it turns out Mike had caught Zalinda in a compromising position with another woman. His suspensions and the rumors about her sexuality had been confirmed, according to Mike’s journal.

Mike mailed his personal journal to me and my mother after he had been gone about six weeks.. He wanted us to understand why he had disappeared. He warned us that the location where he mailed the package, was not his final destination. A note within the journal instructed us to turn the journal over to the authorities, or we could be charged with aiding and abiding a criminal.

Mike had written on a separate sheet, which I knew better than to give to the police, how he had killed his high school sweetheart. Being a twin, Mike understood that I needed to know exactly what  happened.

They had been out of law school for two years before Mike’s evil plan unfolded. He hadn’t wanted to believe the rumors, nor what his own eyes had seen, during their last year of law school.

Zalinda had always been very particular about her looks. Makeup had been a part of her everyday ritual, even in high school. Mike had taken advantage of her vanity and placed an anthrax, type powder, in her makeup without her knowledge. The poison seeped into Zalinda’s pours and the results had been fatal.

Mike hadn’t gone into details with the particulars, but he did say he had taken the necessary precautions, not to be hurt by his own evil plot. The autopsy was not conclusive on how or what had killed her, yet they ruled her death a homicide.
